Louis de Bernières

Louis de Bernières is the best-selling author of Captain Corelli's Mandolin, which won the Commonwealth Writers' Prize. His most recent books are Birds Without Wings and A Partisan's Daughter and a collection of stories, Notwithstanding. Poetry was Louis de Bernières’ first literary love and Imagining Alexandria is his debut poetry collection. Here the author returns us to the vivid Mediterranean landscape of his fiction.

Oliver James trained and practised as a clinical child psychologist and, since 1988, has worked as a writer, journalist, broadcaster and television documentary producer and presenter. His books include the best-selling Affluenza, They F*** You Up, Love Bombing, Office Politics: How to Thrive in a World of Lying, Backstabbing and Dirty Tricks, and Britain on the Couch, which was also a successful documentary series for Channel 4. His newest book is Not In Your Genes: The Real Reason Children Are Like Their Parents is out in March.

Cerys Matthews

Cerys Matthews is a singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, author and broadcaster. She hosts a Sunday morning music show on BBC 6 Music, makes documentaries for television as well as BBC Radio 2 and 4 and is a regular writer and presenter for the Culture Show and the One Show. Cerys won gold at the Sony Radio Academy Awards and her Penguin published sing-a-long book Hook, Line and Singer has been a bestseller. She has served as creative director for the World music expo and as a judge for the Dylan Thomas literary prize, 2013. Cerys has, since childhood, collected, sung and played traditional songs from Wales, Ireland, Scotland and England, and has gone on to share them with audiences worldwide. She remains an avid collector of songs from all over the globe. She was lead singer and songwriter for multi-million selling band Catatonia, and duets with Sir Tom Jones on perennial winter favourite 'Baby, It's Cold Outside'.

Sara Rankin

Sara Rankin

Professor Sara Rankin has a degree and PhD in Pharmacology from Kings College London. Following research training in the University of California and at Cancer Research UK she joined the National Heart and Lung Institute (NHLI) in 1995. Now a Professor in Leukocyte and Stem Cell Biology at Imperial College London, she is a fellow of the Society of Biology and a Wellcome Trust Senior Investigator. Her current research is in the new field of regenerative pharmacology, investigating how we can use drugs to stimulate bone marrow stem cells to repair the body.

In addition she is part of a European consortium aimed at optimizing regeneration of de-cellularized trachea scaffolds in vivo and is Theme Lead for Biology and Therapeutics in the Centre for Blast Injury Studies at Imperial. She has published extensively and is regularly invited to present her work at both national and international scientific meetings. Prof Rankin is committed to public engagement activities and in this capacity she is the NHLI’s Lead for Outreach, runs stem cell workshops for pupils and teachers, regularly participates in public debates and is the lead scientist in an arts project, “Wasted”, currently on tour in the UK.
